Featured project – Conservation of the red-billed currasow
The Red-billed currasow, Crax blumenbachii, restricted to the Atlantic rainforest, was historically found from southern Bahia south to Rio de Janeiro and east to Minas Gerais. Habitat loss has resulted in remnant populations becoming extremely fragmented, and hunting is thought to be another important factor in population decline. Currently wild populations are thought to be restricted to seven or eight reserves. Reintroduction is being carried out at three sites in Minas Gerais, where the last wild birds were seen in the 1970s, and one site in Rio de Janiero, where no wild birds had been seen since the 1960s.
